Rupert Everett is officially off the market.
In a recent cover story for the Tatler, the My Best Friend’s Wedding star revealed that he and his longtime partner – Brazilian accountant Henrique – tied the knot during a secret ceremony.
According to the news outlet, the joyous event occurred at Camden Town Hall earlier this summer. The two later celebrated their nuptials at Ciao Bella, which was noted as Rupert’s favourite restaurant.
“I have always hated weddings, although I do love funerals. But when you get older… I have seen so many problems that gay couples face, so it’s really more about forward-thinking, as we have been together for a long time now,” he told the news outlet.
“And I don’t know how long I’m going to last. Well, being tall, I’ve never seen a 95-year-old 6ft 5in person. You just never know what’s going to happen.”
As Rupert suggested, his opinions on marriage and weddings haven’t always been positive.
In 2012, the Napoleon actor made headlines when he described weddings as a disaster during an interview with The Guardian.
“Why do queens want to go and get married in churches? Obviously, this crusty old pathetic Anglican church – the most joke-ish church of all jokey churches – of course, they don’t want to have queens getting married,” he said.
“It’s kind of understandable that they don’t; they’re crusty old calcified freaks. But why do we want to get married in churches? I don’t understand that, myself, personally.”
Rupert went on to express his disdain for many of the staples featured in weddings, including the flowers, the attire and the reception.
“It’s grotesque. It’s just hideous. The wedding cake, the party, the champagne, the inevitable divorce two years later,” he continued.
“It’s just a waste of time in the heterosexual world, and in the homosexual world, I find it personally beyond tragic that we want to ape this institution that is so clearly a disaster.”
However, in a 2020 sit-down with The Times, Rupert seemingly had a change of heart on the matter,
“Actually, I wouldn’t mind getting married now. Yes. I’d marry my boyfriend. Although I would only have two or three people to my wedding,” he explained.
Rupert even expressed his love for ceremonies, adding that it would be “sweet” to have one in a church in Wiltshire.
Congratulations are in order for Rupert Everett and Henrique.
