Russell Tovey has celebrated his recent casting in the Doctor Who spin-off with a shirtless selfie.
After attending Comic-Con over the weekend, where the spin-off was announced, the American Horror Story actor made his followers swoon as he showed off his buff physique (pic below!).
Tovey will lead the five-part series, The War Between The Land And The Sea, alongside Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who is best known for her roles in The Morning Show (2019), The Girl Before (2021) and Loki (2021-present).
The British actress also memorably starred in ‘San Junipero’, the widely-acclaimed Black Mirror episode that focused on a love story between two queer women in a simulated reality.
The War Between The Land And The Sea will follow a military organisation called UNIT.
According to Variety, “the series picks up as a fearsome and ancient species emerges from the ocean, dramatically revealing themselves to humanity, an international crisis is triggered.
“With the entire population at risk, UNIT steps into action as the land and sea wage war.”
Showrunner, writer and executive producer Russell T Davies said: “I’m so lucky to work with such a magnificent cast. And this is a huge, muscular, thrilling drama which will shake The Whoniverse to its foundations.
“When the Doctor’s not in town, the whole of humanity is in trouble.”
Lindsay Salt, Director of Drama at the BBC, added: “THE WAR BETWEEN THE LAND AND THE SEA is another utterly unique and gripping drama from Russell T Davies and we’re delighted to welcome the show to the Whoniverse!
“Featuring a stellar cast, with Russell Tovey and Gugu Mbatha-Raw taking on leading roles, this brand new epic mini series will leave audiences on the edge of their seats as they watch UNIT take on one of their biggest battles to save humanity.”
After rising to fame in BBC’s supernatural drama Being Human, Tovey earned worldwide recognition for his role in HBO’s cult queer series Looking, which he later reprised in Looking: The Movie.
In 2022, he led the 11th season of American Horror Story, sub-titled NYC. The following year, he played Marwan Rizwan’s boyfriend in his lauded BBC Three comedy Juice.
