Heartstopper: Author Alice Oseman says season 2 will be “a little bit darker”

Heartstopper creator Alice Oseman has spilt more tea on the show’s highly anticipated second season.

Since 2022, TV enthusiasts have immersed themselves in the beloved Netflix adaptation of Oseman’s webcomic/graphic novel.

Following its release, the series earned rave reviews from TV viewers and critics – which resulted in the show getting renewed for not one but two additional seasons.

Over the last few months, new details about the show’s sophomore season have emerged, including its slightly “darker” and “mature” tone.

While attending the 2023 Hay Festival of Literature & Arts, Oseman spilt all the tea on what fans can expect from the highly anticipated release.

“Season two’s aim was to capture the joy and the magic of season one while also feeling that the characters have grown up and matured a little bit, so we’re exploring some things that are maybe a little bit darker than season one,” they explained (per the BBC).

“The romances are getting a little bit more mature… it’s like an elevation, I like to think, of season one.”

Oseman also teased that season two will feature “more asexual and aromantic representation” by way of Truham Grammar’s resident book enthusiast Isaac Henderson – who is played by Tobie Donovan.

The 28-year-old writer also identifies as asexual and aromantic.

Lastly, Oseman opened up about the continued success of Heartstopper, which they described as “mind-blowing.”

“I still can’t quite wrap my head around the journey and how much Heartstopper has blown up,” they gushed.

“It’s so surreal, especially the (TV) scenes that are word-for-word from the comics. Seeing my imagination come to life is mind-blowing. I was very committed to prose writing… I thought this would be a one-year project.”

The Solitare author’s recent comments come a few weeks after they teased new details regarding Nick Nelson’s (Kit Connor) tense season two storyline.

“This season, Nick wants to come out to the world, but faced with his nasty brother, his mostly absent father, and his laddy mates, soon finds that it’s not as easy as he initially thought,” they explained to Radio Times.

Heartstopper season two premieres on 3 August on Netflix.

The synopsis is as follows: “Nick and Charlie navigate their new relationship; Tara and Darcy face unforeseen challenges and Tao and Elle work out if they can ever be more than just friends. With exams on the horizon, a school trip to Paris and a prom to plan, the gang has a lot to juggle as they journey through the next stages of life, love and friendship.”

In addition to Connor and Joe Locke’s reprising their Nick and Charlie roles, season two will see the return of William Gao as Tao, Yasmin Finney as Elle, Corinna Brown as Tara, Kizzy Edgell as Darcy, Jenny Walser as Tori Spring, Sebastian Croft as Ben Hope, Cormac Hyde-Corrin as Harry Greene, and Rhea Norwood as Imogen Heaney.
