Abbott Elementary star responds to sexuality rumours with a powerful message

Tyler James Williams has addressed the rumours regarding his sexuality.

Since landing his breakthrough role in the hit sitcom, Everybody Hates Chris, the beloved talent has made an unforgettable mark in the entertainment industry for his comedic wit and standout performances.

Recently, Williams gained acclaim for his portrayal of first-grade teacher Gregory Eddie in the Golden Globe and Emmy Award-winning series, Abbott Elementary.

While the majority of pop culture enthusiasts have shown support for the Dear White People star, some individuals used his resurgence to speculate about the actor’s personal life, specifically his sexuality.

On 4 June, Williams addressed the rumours with a powerful message via his Instagram story.

“Usually I wouldn’t address stuff like this, but I feel like it as a conversation is bigger than me. I’m not gay, but I think the culture of trying to ‘find’ some kind of hidden trait or behaviour that a closed person ‘let slip’ is very dangerous,” he wrote.

The 30-year-old talent then pointed out that “overanalyzing” a person’s behaviour to figure out their sexuality contributes to the anxiety that “queer and queer-questioning people feel when they fear living their truth.”

“It makes the most pedestrian of conversations and interactions in spaces feel less safe for our gay brothers and sisters and those who may be questioning,” he added.

“It also reinforces an archetype many straight men have to live under that is often times unrealistic, less free, and limits individual expressing. Being straight doesn’t look one way. Being gay doesn’t look one way.”

The Walking Dead star also opened up about using his platform to combat those dangerous “archetypes.”

“What may seem like harmless fun and conversation may actually be sending a dangerous message to those struggling with real issues. I refuse to inadvertently contribute to that message,” he said.

Towards the end of his statement, Williams wished his LGBTQ+ followers a happy Pride Month before expressing his hopes that they can “feel seen in ways that make [them] feel safe.”

“As an ally, I continue to be committed to assisting in that where I can and helping to cultivate a future where we are all accepted and given permission to be ourselves,” added alongside a heart emoji.

Shortly after Williams uploaded his heartfelt message, fans took to social media to send supportive messages to The Wedding Year star.

One fan tweeted: “How To Ally 101.”

Another person wrote: “I hope everyone reads tyler james williams’ stories and takes notes.”
