Queer: Daniel Craig gets candid on filming sex scenes with Omar Apollo

Daniel Craig has split the tea on how he and Omar Apollo approached their steamy sex scenes in Queer.

Since December 2022, LGBTQIA+ film enthusiasts have waited with bated breath for the release of the Luca Guadagnino-directed film.

Based on William S Burrough’s 1985 short novel of the same name, the forthcoming drama follows Lee (Craig), an American outcast who flees to Mexico following a drug bust in New Orleans. While in Mexico City, he becomes infatuated with Allerton ( Drew Starkey), a discharged serviceman from the American Navy.

In addition to Craig and Starkey, Queer marks the acting debut of singer-songwriter Apollo, who confirmed his involvement back in July.

During a recent sit down with Variety, the James Bond icon opened up about working with the ‘Ivy’ singer, revealing that their steamy sex scene was a breeze to film and free from any nerves.

“Omar is a beautiful human being. You just have to look after each other. That’s all. We’re all adults. We know what it’s about, and try to make the scene as real as you can,” he shared.

Craig isn’t the only one with wholesome memories of their filming experience.

In a September feature for Interview Magazine, Apollo described his creative process with The Mother star as a “vibe.”

“I don’t know if I could say this, but we were drinking gin and tonics before our scene. It was a vibe. I had a really cool experience with him. He definitely has this presence to him that is felt from far away,” he explained to Queer co-star Starkey.

“I remember asking him, ‘How do you feel when the camera’s on?” And he said, ‘To be honest, every time the camera’s on me, I’m terrified.’ I thought that was beautiful. You have to be vulnerable. You have to be open to these emotions. It was such an honest answer.”

Apollo also opened up recording ADR (Automatic Dialogue Replacement) for the aforementioned scene, adding: “It was so funny. Luca was like, ‘Can you do noises?’ I was like, ‘Okay.'”

Last month, the film made waves in the festival circuit following its world premiere at the 81st Venice International Film Festival.

The project has also garnered a 77% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 62 reviews from critics.

Fortunately, for the general moviegoer, the wait for Queer will be coming to an end relatively soon.

On 27 November, the drama will have a limited release in the US via its distributor A24.

As for other territories, including the UK, Ireland and Canada, the rights for Queer were recently acquired by Mubi – who will reportedly announce release plans soon.
