Heartstopper creator says season 4 won’t “be out for quite a while yet”

Erm, some pretty devastating news incoming: it looks like Heartstopper season four won’t be arriving for some time.

In a new interview with Tudum by Netflix, creator Alice Oseman reflected on the future of the series and the highly-anticipated sixth (and final) chapter of the graphic novel.

“In terms of the show, obviously there is more story in the books that we have yet to cover, and we would love to tell the end of the story in TV form,” said Oseman, who also serves as executive producer and showrunner of the Netflix series.

“As much as I — and everyone else — want the final installment to come to the screen as soon as possible, there are a lot of moving parts to account for that make it hard to solidify anything. But we’re doing our best, and will let fans know as soon as we can.”

Season three, which launched on Netflix earlier this month, adapted the fourth and fifth volumes of the graphic novels. With only one more volume to be adapted, season four might also mark the end for Heartstopper on screen.

However, we need to repeat the word might, as Oseman said “there’s nothing that I can really share yet. I feel like viewers of the show hopefully know that I’m very open and honest online about the process and what’s going on with production.”

They added: “So of course, I will share anything when I’m able to — but that’s all there is at the moment.”

Additionally, Oseman revealed that they’re “very much at the beginning” of writing volume six, which means the graphic novel and the next season of Heartstopper won’t “be out for quite a while yet”.

“I’m coming towards the end of the story now, which is a very bittersweet feeling. I love Heartstopper so much, so I am very sad that it’s going to end, but I’m ready to tell the end of that story… I feel like it’s in the best circumstances. I can’t wait to show everyone what happens,” they continued.

“Our little gang of Heartstopper characters are going to all grow up and have to go out into the big wide world. It’s really fun to imagine where all of these characters are going to end up. I’m excited to take them on that journey in Volume 6.”

Season three premiered earlier this month to widespread critical acclaim, with praise aimed at Joe Locke’s performance of Charlie and Oseman’s writing – particularly the handling of Charlie’s eating disorder.

“As the summer holiday ends and the months race on, the friends begin to realise that the school year will come with both its joys and its challenges,” reads the official synopsis.

“As they learn more about each other and their relationships, plan social events and parties and start thinking about university choices, everyone must learn to lean on those they love when life doesn’t go to plan.”

Heartstopper season three also sees the return of Kit Connor as Nick, Yasmin Finney as Elle, William Gao as Tao, Corinna Brown as Tara, Kizzy Edgell as Darcy, Tobie Donovan as Isaac, Jenny Walser as Tori, Rhea Norwood as Imogen, Cormac Hyde-Corrin as Harry, Fisayo Akinade as Nathan, Chetna Pandya as Coach Singh, Bradley Riches as James and Bel Priestly as Naomi.

New faces include Hayley Atwell as Aunt Diane, Eddie Marsan as Geoff, Jensen Clayden as Oliver Spring and Darragh Hand as Michael Holden.
