Mid-Century Modern: Gay sitcom from Will & Grace creators gets major update

Mid-Century Modern, a new gay sitcom from the creators of Will & Grace, has received a major update.

Despite Hulu ordering a pilot less than two months ago, the multi-cam comedy – described as the gay equivalent of Golden Girls – has already received a full series order.

Additionally, the news arrives just four weeks after the pilot was shot in front of a live audience which, according to Deadlinehas been “enjoying a very strong word-of-mouth internally that kicked into high gear after the table read”.

Created by Max Mutchnick and David Kohan, Mid-Century Modern follows “three best friends — gay gentlemen of a certain age – who, after an unexpected death, decide to spend their golden years living together in Palm Springs where the wealthiest one lives with his mother.

“As a chosen family, they prove that no matter how hard things get, there’s always someone around to remind you it would be better if you got your neck done.”

The series will star Nathan Lane as Bunny Schneiderman, Matt Bomer as Jerry Frank, Nathan Lee Graham as Arthur and Linda Lavin as Sybil Schneiderman, Bunny’s mother.

As per Hulu’s character descriptions, Bunny is a “successful businessman with one foot in retirement” who is “forever in search of love, but he first has to be convinced he’s worthy of it”.

Bomer’s character Jerry ditched the Mormon Church and his marriage in his early 20s “after his wife informed him and the rest of the congregation that he was a homosexual.

“Now a latter-day saint in the literal sense of the term, Jerry is pure of heart. He is also hard of body and soft of head. ”

Graham’s Arthur is a “dignified, elegant fashion industry veteran who believes that life will never quite match the grace and panache that would exist if only he were in charge.”

And finally, Sybil’s “strengths are her weaknesses: wise, caring, and iconoclastic – which sometimes means she’s critical, smothering and amoral”.

Mutchnik and Kohan are best known for blazing a rainbow trail on the small-screen with Will & Grace, which earned 18 Primetime Emmy Awards and has been hailed as one of the best comedies of all time.

Mid-Century Modern also boasts an executive producer in Ryan Murphy, who has also helmed some of television’s most groundbreaking LGBTQIA+ stories, such as Glee, American Horror Story and Pose.

The pilot was directed by Emmy winner James Burrows, who also serves as an executive producer. His legendary credits include Frasier, Friends, 3rd Rock from the Sun and The Big Bang Theory.

A release date for Mid-Century Modern is yet to be announced – stay tuned for further updates.
