Attention! The M3GAN universe is expanding with a new spin-off film.
Back in December 2022, film lovers flocked to theatres to witness the horror comedy released by Universal Pictures.
Starring Allison Williams and Jennifer Davis, the film follows an artificially intelligent doll who develops self-awareness and becomes hostile to anyone who comes between her and her human companion, Cady (Violet McGraw).
Upon its release, M3GAN received widespread acclaim for its satirical elements and blend of camp and horror, as well as the performances of the main cast.
The titular doll has also become an instant icon within the LGBTQIA+ community thanks to her fashion sense and sickening choreographed dance routines.
While it’s been over a year since M3GAN made its way to theatres, the film has continued to gain support from pop culture enthusiasts.
In light of its continued popularity, Atomic Monster and Blumehouse – two of the production companies behind the film, announced that a spin-off set in the M3GAN universe is officially in the works.
Titled Soulm8te, the upcoming film – which has a 2 January 2026 release date – is set to follow a man who seeks comfort from an artificially intelligent android following the death of his wife, per Variety.
The synopsis adds: “In an attempt to create a truly sentient partner, he inadvertently turns a harmless lovebot into a deadly soulmate.”
While not much is known about the cast, queer filmmaker Kate Dolan has signed to direct. She also added some rewrites to the original script, which Rafael Jordan, James Wan and Ingrid Bisu penned.
Shortly after the exciting news was announced, fans flocked to social media to express their excitement for the film.
One person on X, formerly known as Twitter, wrote: “Oh, we will be watching the M3GAN MULT1V3RSE.”
Another fan tweeted: “OH, THIS IS MY TYPE OF TEAAAAAAAA.”
A third user added: “ANOTHER HIT COMING IKTR.”
Fortunately, fans won’t have to wait till 2026 to return to the M3GAN universe.
The highly anticipated sequel to the original film, M3GAN 2.0, is set to hit theatres in January 2025.
Akela Cooper will once again helm the script, with Williams and McGraw reprising their respective roles as Gemma, M3GAN’s creator, and Cady, her best friend.
As of this writing, plot details for M3GAN 2.0 are being kept under wraps.
