9-1-1 star Ryan Guzman has opened up about the possibility of a “Buddie” romance.
Throughout the show’s seventh season, which is currently airing on ABC in the US, the writers have blessed LGBTQIA+ fans with an abundance of queer-led content – including Buck (Oliver Stark) coming out as bisexual.
Taking place in 9-1-1’s milestone 100th episode, Buck (Oliver Stark) had his first same-sex kiss with former firefighter and LAFD Air Operations pilot Tommy (Lou Ferrigno Jr.).
Since that fateful day, viewers have wholeheartedly embraced the character’s heartwarming journey and his blossoming relationship with the hunky pilot.
However, some fans have wondered if Buck’s recent development will lead to his best friend and fellow Station 118 firefighter, Eddie Diaz (Ryan Guzman), coming out.
Over the last six seasons, the two characters and their undeniable chemistry have captivated the 9-1-1 fandom, resulting in many passionately shipping the pair as a couple, aka “Buddie.”
In a recent interview with TV Insider, Guzman shared his thoughts on the possibility of the pair’s relationship entering romantic territory.
“We just to the point where Buck is having this own personal growth of himself, so it’s like baby steps towards anything and if anything,” he explained.
While “Buddie’s” future remains unclear, the Step Up Revolution star gushed about the pair’s current friendship and how the show is pushing back against harmful anti-LGBTQIA+ rhetoric.
“I think there’s still an air out there in the world that your sexuality determines if you’re weak or not, or determines if you’re capable or not, of being just a good human being, which is such a crazy thing to think about. I love that we get to dispel that ideology,” he continued.
“So I think with all the love that we’ve gotten and all the ideas of Eddie and Buck being together, the truth of the matter is right now that we need to live in this space and showcase this so the world can see that is how you handle this situation.”
Guzman’s interview comes a few weeks after Stark admitted to GAY TIMES his support of Buck and Eddie romance.
“I see what everybody else sees. I watch the same show,” he said while acknowledging the natural on-screen chemistry between himself and Guzaman.
However, if a Buddie romance were to come to fruition in the future, he explained that it would be because the story naturally “progresses in that way.”
“It shouldn’t be done just to please a specific subset of fans. It should be done because that’s the right story to tell, and that’s, in fact, the much more progressive and positive way to tell the story anyway,” he said.
