Priscilla, Queen of the Desert director announces sequel with original stars

A sequel to the groundbreaking film The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert has been greenlit.

On 19 April, the director of the beloved 1994 movie, Stephen Elliott, shared the news during his interview with The Guardian Australia.

Adding to the excitement, the talented creative revealed that the original stars of the cult classic, Guy Pearce, Hugo Weaving, and Terence Stamp, are all set to reprise their roles in the sequel.

Elliott, who will serve as the project’s director, producer and screenwriter, also confirmed to the news outlet that the script is complete and negotiations are taking place with production companies and financiers.

When asked why he finally decided to make a sequel 30 years later, the Easy Virtue director revealed that its the perfect time to make the film.

“People have been screaming for me to do this for 30 years. And suddenly, I had the realisation that we’re all getting old. We’re losing people,” he explained.

“And with Trump coming in now – it’s all about to erupt again. Somebody said to me, ‘Is this the right time to make this film? I said, ‘It is the perfect time to make this film.’

He went on to say that despite the original film being a glitzy, glamorous and fun story, it was also a “dagger in the heart,” adding that the sequel will be more than just “tits and feathers.”

Towards the end of his interview, Elliot teased that the movie will take place in Australia and overseas. However, he refrained from naming the location.

“This is not a dire story, it’s pretty extravagant. I’m going to give RuPaul a run for her money, let me tell you that,” he coyly added.

Shortly after announcing the news, fans took to social media to express their excitement for the sequel.

“I love and adore the original, so fingers crossed the sequel matches its magic,” one fan wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.”

Another user tweeted: “They had me at “original trio.”

A third fan added: “WHATWHATWHATWHAT PLEASE DONT LET THIS BE A FEVER DREAM.”

The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, first captured the hearts of moviegoers in 1994.

Set amid the backdrop of the Australian Outback, the road trip comedy follows two drag queens, Anthony (Weaving) and Adam (Pearce), and a trans woman named Bernadette (Stamp), as they travel the desert in Priscilla (a lavender tour bus) to perform a drag show in Alice Springs.

Along the way, the trio encounters various groups and individuals who help strengthen their bond with each other and their LGBTQIA+ identities.

Following its release, the film earned universal acclaim from critics and viewers for its groundbreaking portrayal of LGBTQIA+ topics, its comedic storyline and outstanding cast performances.

The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert also received numerous accolades –– including an Academy Award for Best Costume Design and a BAFTA for Best Makeup and Hair.
