Scream 7 is officially in development under Christopher Landon, whose horror film credits include Happy Death Day and Freaky.
He will take over from Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the team known as Radio Silence, who directed the fifth and sixth films, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The duo is taking a step back to focus on a currently untitled horror movie for Universal, though each will be back alongside third group member Chad Villella as executive producers.
Paramount is expected to return as distributor.
A few things, however, still remain unclear – including who will be writing Scream 7.
James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick wrote the two most recent instalments, though as Landon is an established screenwriter who has written or co-written all of his directorial efforts, there is potential for this to change.

Which stars will return is also up in the air, with sources claiming that there will be no deals put in place until the dual writer and actor strikes are settled.
Neve Campbell, the actress who played the franchise’s beloved lead Sidney Prescott in the first five films, did not appear in Scream 6 due to a pay dispute – much to the dismay of fans.
She has since indicated that she is open to returning if the offer presented is right.
“I don’t know that I’m done for good,” she told People. “It would really depend on what they came to me with next. It would have to be different. It would have to be a different attitude and I’m not sure that’s going to happen.”
David Arquette was also not present in Scream 6 after his character, Dewey Riley, was brutally killed off in Scream 5.

As such, Courteney Cox, known in the franchise as fierce reporter Gale Weathers, is the only star to appear in every single Scream instalment so far (with the exception of Roger L. Jackson who voices Ghostface off-screen).
As she survived her vicious attack in the latest film, there’s every possibility that we could be seeing Gale in Scream 7.
Whether or not newly introduced characters such as Sam Carpenter (Melissa Barrera), Tara Carpenter (Jenna Ortega), Chad Meeks-Martin (Mason Gooding) or Mindy Meeks-Martin (Jasmin Savoy Brown) will return also remains to be seen.
Hayden Panettiere depicted fan favourite Kirby Reed in the fourth and sixth films, though after surviving both could also possibly appear in the next movie.
