The creator of Euphoria has opened up about what’s in store for Zendaya’s character in season three.
Back in February 2022, the popular cable network surprised fans when it renewed the gritty teen drama for a third season.
“Sam, Zendaya, and the entire cast and crew of Euphoria have taken Season 2 to extraordinary heights, challenging narrative convention and form, while maintaining its heart,” said Francesca Orsi, EVP of HBO Programming.
“We couldn’t be more honored to work with this gifted, wildly talented team or more excited to continue our journey with them into season 3.”
Since that fateful day, viewers have anxiously awaited new information surrounding the show’s upcoming entry.
Fortunately in a recent interview for Zendaya’s Elle cover story, Euphoria creator Sam Levinson shared some new deets about what fans can expect – including Rue’s journey toward sobriety.
When speaking about the themes of season three, The Idol director revealed that the troubled character will “explore what it means to be an individual with principles in a corrupt world.”
He also stated that the new batch of episodes will have a “film noir” type of feel.
In addition to spilling tea on season three, Levinson showed major love to Zendaya and her strong work ethic.
“She’s the most competitive person I know, in a good way. She’s constantly growing as an artist and always seeking a challenge. She’s never complacent,” he added.
Levison’s interview comes a few months after Zendaya opened up about what she wants for Rue in season three.
“I know that she can do it because Sam wrote it, and Sam is Rue, and he’s done it,” the Dune star continued. “He’s proof that there is hope for Rue and anyone like Rue, and from the beautiful letters and people who have reached out,” the Challengers star explained during a December Q&A session (per The Hollywood Reporter.)
“I am so grateful for those experiences when somebody comes up to me, and they speak about Rue and how they’ve connected to her or whatever part of their healing journey she has been able to be a part of.
“To me that is the greatest, greatest gift I can ever ask, it gives me euphoria and purpose in what I do… I just hope for a little bit of joy and for her just to be able to breathe and love without the fear of losing. I mean she’s gonna have to go through some things, yes, but you know, we’ll get there.”
Since its 2019 debut, Euphoria has received widespread critical acclaim due to its relatable characters, gripping storylines and representation of the modern LGBTQ+ experience.
Alongside Zendaya, the first two seasons starred Hunter Schafer, Jacob Elordi, Maude Apatow, Eric Dane, Alexa Demie, Barbie Ferreira, Storm Reid as Gia Bennett, Sydney Sweeney, Nika King, Colman Domingo, Javon “Wanna” Walton, and the late Angus Cloud.
