Drag Race Down Under: Josh Cavallo reflects on guest judge role ahead of season 3 premiere

Gay football star Josh Cavallo has opened up about his upcoming stint on RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under season three.

On 28 July, 10 new diverse drag entertainers from across Australia and New Zealand will for the crown and title of ‘Down Under’s Next Drag Superstar’.

RuPaul is set to return as host alongside returning judges Michelle Visage and Rhys Nicholson.

In a statement, the Emmy winner said: “Australasian drag is filled with heart and humor, and I’m thrilled to share my Season 3 queens to the world, for all to see their charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent.”

In addition to the new set of challenges, runways, and sure-to-be iconic lip-sync showdowns, the upcoming batch of episodes will feature an array of celebrity guest judges – including openly gay Adelaide United player Cavallo.

On 19 July, the 23-year-old athlete took to Instagram to express his excitement about his forthcoming appearance in the series.

“Start your engines! RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under Season 3 is coming! As the first openly gay male professional football player, embracing your authentic self means freedom but for so many of the queer community, this isn’t as easy as you think,” he wrote.

“It’s a battle hundreds of millions are going through everyday around the world as we speak. RuPaul’s Drag Race is important for everyone to celebrate walking in your own shoes and showing the world the real you in your journey.

“Super thrilled to be a guest on the new season on RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under Season 3.”

Shortly after uploading his post, fans flocked to the comment section to send him congratulatory messages.

One fan wrote: “Wow this is seriously major!! Congrats”

Another fan commented: “Omg so f***ing excited for this!! So proud of you darling.

Following the mixed reception and controversy of season one, which saw Kita Mean crowned as Down Under’s inaugural winner, season two returned last year to rave reviews.

Spankie Jackzon ultimately conquered over Hannah Conda and Kween Kong, winning one-year supply of Anastasia Beverly Hills cosmetics, a crown and scepter from Fierce Drag Jewels and a $50,000 cash prize.

The third season of Drag Race Down Under will air on WOW Presents Plus in international territories, TVNZ+ in New Zealand and Stan in Australia. Meet the diverse cast below.
